It can be challenging to know just what to do when your child is struggling. The chances are that they don't know how to express exactly what they're feeling or what caused these problems--which means that you can be left feeling confused and helpless. The good news is that there are some simple, powerful ways you can help your struggling child by making them feel safe, loved, and listened to.

Making a Difference in Your Child's Life

No matter what your child is going through, you need to remember that it is possible to make a difference. You don't have to be perfect or know all the right answers; you just need to be willing to "be there" for your child, in whatever way you can.

Powerful Ways to Help Your Child

Focus on Your Child's Needs

By asking yourself what concrete, actionable things you can do to help make your child feel more calm, comfortable, or relaxed, you can create a sort of plan for yourself. This makes it easier to focus on what you can do, rather than worrying or feeling like you can't help.

Seek Support

You aren't alone in your parenting journey. Talk to other parents about their struggles, strategies, and beliefs--and remember that the Idaho Youth Ranch has parenting resources to help answer your questions. Sometimes individual, group, or family therapy is the best method, so keep those option in mind if you believe your child or your family could benefit.ย

Don't Forget About Yourself

It's not selfish to set some time aside for self-care when you're parenting a struggling child. In fact, neglecting yourself will only make things worse for your child--so get good sleep, eat healthy (and treat yourself every once in a while), and find some form of physical activity that makes you feel energized and happy.
